Environmental Legislation

We administer over a dozen Acts of Parliament, either completely or partially, and are responsible for meeting numerous duties which are set out in legislation. Under its various acts, the we work to address and report on a broad range of Environmental issues, including the monitoring of air and water quality as well as regulating the level of toxic substances in commercial products.

We admister a range of different environmental legislation. The country's most important environmental act is the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA, 1990) is administered on our part, and sets out much of the framework to prevent pollution and protect natural and human health. We also administer the Species at Risk Act (SARA), which aims to protect species at risk and maintain healthy ecosystems throughout Canada.
